Gordon Swire and Brian Evans are a pair of vastly experienced film producers operating out of West London. They specialise in corporate video and have recently completed projects for the Metropolitan Police and the Royal British Legion.
They came to me with a familiar list of requests. The site required a visual update, a responsive design and content management. Their primary concern, however, was to update their video portfolio. They were using an outdated flash based system with a cramped feel and hideously long loading times.
Eventually we agreed to go with Vimeo as a video delivery system. However, this presented a number of issues of its own. My clients preferred interface was a matrix of thumbnails on the home page.
Whenever one of the thumbnails was clicked an overlay would appear and the video would automatically begin to play. When each video ended both the video itself and the overlay screen would disappear and the user would be returned to the thumbnail screen.
However, this interface would only function on desktop machines. For devices based on Android or iOS, which automatically play videos outside of the browser, it made more sense to embed the videos directly onto the page. This meant building a JS script which could tell which operating system was being used before presenting the web page.
Eventually we came up with a solution that worked smoothly across all devices.
